Bridge Design and Construction Guidelines

BMS Bridge Design and Construction Project

Your bridge must:
• Be a suspension, semi-suspension, or cable-stayed bridge,
• Span a 3-foot long gap,
• Have a 6-inch wide span,
• Have between one and three towers.

There is no limit on the height of the towers.
You may bring in whatever materials you wish for your project, except for solid pieces of metal.
However, metal fasteners and wire are acceptable.

On Thursday we will test our bridges for the following criteria:
1. Weight load (20%)
2. Wind resistance (15%)
3. Seismic resistance (15%)
4. Weight of materials (15%)
5. Weight of materials : weight load ratio (25%)
6. Aesthetics (10%)

Moving Ahead

Hey everyone,

Some pretty cool bridges were assembled on Thursday! Also, we hope that the research on our local bridges helped you to understand their structural, aesthetic, and cultural features.

Please do 20 minutes of written reflection on your learning over the weekend.

Also, please take a look at the bottom of the following link for a table of terms that you should be familiar with:

The field trip is on for Tuesday, but we need drivers very badly - please ask! Not enough drivers means no trip.

Have a great weekend!

Off we go!

Hi Everyone,

What a great couple of days we have had getting this unit started! THREE IMPORTANT ITEMS BELOW:

1. Tonight's work - like last night's - includes 20 minutes of written reflection on your learning experiences in this morning's humanities block.

2. Also, if you have not completed it, make sure that you and your partner have finished your Bridges of the Bay Area paper. See description below:

Work with your partner to compose a short, typed, well-written paper about your bridge. This needs to be based on on-line research, and WRITTEN IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Also, you must cite whatever references you use (just the web address will do for this exercise).

We will share these papers with one another on Thursday.

The minimal information to be included (please do more as inspiration demands):

The Basics
Name of your bridge
Where is it (see the Bay Area map in the main room)?
When was it built?
How much did it cost?
From what materials is it made?
What type of bridge design is it?
How long is it?
How tall is it?

History and Culture
Please describe why it was built.
• What people and/or places needed to be connected and why?
• Who advocated for the bridge to be built?
• How long did construction take?
• Was there any notable opposition to its construction?
Has it been changed over time? If so, why?
Does this bridge still play a major role in the Bay Area Culture? If so, how?

Please include at least one picture in your paper.

Have fun and good luck!

3. ONE LAST THING! REMEMBER THAT OUR BRIDGES FIELD TRIP IS NEXT TUESDAY!
